Florida Power & Light prepares to cut power bills as natgas prices slide

Florida Power & & Light (FPL), one of the U.S.'s greatest power companies, said on Wednesday that its clients might see a decrease in their electrical power expenses from May onwards, in part due to lower natgas rates.

The NextEra Energy-owned business has sought 2 rate decreases - one in April and one in May - from the Florida Public Service Commission, and if authorized, a common 1,000 kilowatt-hour (kWh) property costs would be nearly $14 lower in May than today.

Natgas rates have fallen almost 35% this year to their most affordable because June 2020 on Feb. 27, as near-record output, primarily mild weather condition and low heating demand this winter allowed utilities to leave considerably more gas in storage than usual for this time of year.

Low rates could improve U.S. gas use to a record high in 2024 despite gas production dropping, according to the U.S. Energy Info Administration's (EIA) newest outlook.

Apart from lower predicted rates for gas, the rate reductions are also in lieu of the momentary additional charge of remediation costs ending on March 31.

The utility serves almost 12 million people.
