Lahore air pollution strikes historical high, requiring school closures

Unprecedented air contamination levels in Pakistan's secondlargest city of Lahore prompted authorities to take emergency situation steps on Sunday, including providing workfromhome mandates and closing primary schools.

The city held the top area on a real-time list of the world's most polluted cities on Sunday after taping its highest ever pollution reading of 1900 near the Pakistan-India border on Saturday, based on information released by the provincial federal government and Swiss group IQAir.

The government has actually shut main schools for a week, advising moms and dads to make sure children use masks, said Elder Minister of Punjab Marriyum Aurangzeb during a press conference, as a thick blanket of smog covered the city.

Citizens have been urged to stay inside, keep doors and windows shut, and prevent unneeded travel, she stated, adding that health centers had actually been given smog counters.

To lower lorry contamination, 50% of office employees would work from home, stated Aurangzeb.

The government has also enforced a ban on three-wheelers referred to as rickshaws and halted building in particular areas to minimize the contamination levels. Factories and building sites failing to abide by these regulations could be closed down, she said.

Aurangzeb described the scenario as unexpected and attributed the degeneration in air quality to winds bring pollution from neighbouring India.

This can not be solved without talks with India, she stated, including the provincial government would start talks with its bigger neighbour through Pakistan's foreign ministry.

The smog crisis in Lahore, similar to the scenario in India's capital Delhi, tends to get worse during cooler months due to temperature inversion trapping contamination closer to the ground.
