Vertex Energy stops briefly sustainable diesel output to change back to nonrenewable fuel sources

U.S. refiner Vertex Energy said on Thursday it will pause sustainable diesel production at its refinery in Mobile, Alabama, and convert it to produce nonrenewable fuel sources instead, pointing out macroeconomic concerns which may persist through next year.

Renewable diesel can fully substitute traditional diesel, It is much more costly to make and for that reason relies on federal government blending subsidies and mandates.

Specialists state these requireds have stopped working to keep up with supply growth, cratering margins for those who bank on biofuels as a way to endure the shift away from fossil fuels.

Vertex, which only in 2015 transformed some systems of its 75,000 barrel per day refining complex to produce eco-friendly diesel, stated it will exhaust its feedstock stock before stopping briefly sustainable diesel output. It will then convert the systems back to fossil fuels output.

The conversion process will likely happen by the end of this year, according to Tudor Pickering & & Holt.

Due to the substantial macroeconomic headwinds over the past 12 months, a lot of which we believe will continue to occur over the next 18 months and possibly beyond, we have chosen to strategically pause our renewable diesel company and pivot to producing standard fuels, Vertex CEO Benjamin Cowart stated in a very first quarter incomes statement.

The business can still convert these centers to produce eco-friendly diesel once again based upon market conditions, it said.

Vertex said the unit performed at simply around 50% of its 8,000 bpd capacity in the first quarter and eco-friendly fuel gross margins fell from $12.11 a barrel in the fourth quarter of 2023 to $10.29 a barrel in the very first quarter this year.
