Alleged arson attack on Berlin leaves 50,000 homes powerless

Police and the grid operator reported that about 50,000 Berlin households were without power on Tuesday morning following an arson attack suspected to have been committed on two pylons located in a district in the southeast of Berlin in the early hours.

Anja Dierschke, a police spokesperson, said that a political motive could not be ruled out. She added that the investigation was being led by a division specifically tasked with investigating crimes motivated by politics.

Unnamed sources told the Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel that police were investigating if the attack was connected to Tesla's announcement of its plans to build a new development centre in Treptow-Koepenick, the district where the arson occurred.

The report says that police have drawn parallels with a 2024 arson on a pylon carried out by a militant far-left group calling themselves the "Volcano Group shutting down Tesla", which halted production at the carmaker’s factory near Berlin for several days.

When asked about the report Dierschke responded that a link between the attack, and Tesla's announcement couldn't be ruled out.

Tesla didn't immediately respond to a comment request.

Since 2011, authorities in Berlin have attributed a number arson attacks to similar left-wing organizations. (Writing and editing by Helen Popper; Friederike Heine)
