Idemitsu will build a pilot plant to produce solid electrolytes for Toyota's EVs

Idemitsu collaborates with Toyota Motor in order to commercialise the next-generation batteries. This will help Toyota Motor achieve its goal of launching all-solid state batteries-equipped electric vehicles by 2027-2028. This decision marks the beginning of a 'next phase towards commercialisation.

Solid-state batteries are a hot topic among automakers and battery manufacturers. They're hailed as a key component to?longer-lasting, safer and more affordable electric vehicles.

Idemitsu develops mass-production technologies for solid electrolytes - a key component of solid state batteries - and manufactures samples in two small-scale facilities, one of which is primarily focused on material development for Toyota.

Idemitsu will build a large scale pilot plant with a production capacity of about 100 metric tons per annum based on the results from this pilot facility. This?plant's?solid electrolyte will be used to make all-solid-state battery packs for Toyota's EVs.

Construction at Idemitsu's Chiba factory near Tokyo is expected to be completed by 2027. Chiyoda Corp. has been contracted for construction.
