German union cautions Thyssenkrupp versus steel spin-off shortcuts

IG Metall, Germany's largest union, warned Thyssenkrupp on Tuesday versus taking shortcuts in its continuous efforts to restructure and sell the group's steel division.

Knut Giesler, who heads the union in Thyssenkrupp's home state of North-Rhine Westphalia stated it would be inappropriate. for the steel system to create its own turn-around plan.

His remarks come a day after the steel unit's chair stated a. turn-around plan would be presented in April and that neither. production cuts nor layoffs could be ruled out.

It is not acceptable to place the problem exclusively with the. management board and co-determination of the steel division,. Giesler said in a statement.

He said structure conditions required to be created by. Thyssenkrupp, alluding to efforts to make Czech investor Daniel. Kretinsky to a 50% co-owner of the steel department, in a deal. which sources said may require monetary sacrifices.

German organization daily Handelsblatt said that due to the fact that of the. bleak potential customers Thyssenkrupp's steel unit was preparing a new 400. million euro ($ 434 million) cost savings program that comes on top. of a group-wide 2 billion euro effort to lower expenses.

Thyssenkrupp decreased to comment.

Giesler stated the steel company needed an industrial idea. that was sound structurally in addition to financially, a challenge. given its pension liabilities of around 3 billion euros.

This continuous backward and forward should concern an end. Moreover,. political leaders need to also be involved in discovering options for these. far-reaching changes and not simply remain on the sidelines, he. included.
