Chile's Codelco posts 2023 earnings dip as production falls

Chilean copper giant Codelco reported gross revenue of $3.12 billion for 2023, the stateowned producer said in a filing on Thursday, a. 34% dip from a year earlier after the state firm faced. functional and production obstacles.

Codelco, the world's leading copper miner, posted production of. 1.325 million metric tons for the year - its lowest level in a. quarter century - according to the filing, compared to 1.446. million loads in 2022.

Regardless of the drop, along with a pre-tax revenue decline of 74%. year on year to $719 million, Codelco stated it expected. improvements quickly, with a recovery in output by 2030.

2023 was an extremely difficult year in terms of operations and. production, however we are encouraged that it was the lowest part of. a productive trough that will start to enhance this year, Chief. Executive Ruben Alvarado said in a declaration.

Going forward, we anticipate favorable news and a gradual. recovery till we return to our production level of 1.7 million. tons by the end of the years, he added.

For 2024, the company anticipated copper output would stay. constant at between 1.325 and 1.390 million tons, and expected a. capital investment of $4 billion to $5 billion.

Codelco logged incomes before interest, taxes, depreciation. and amortization (EBITDA) of $4.184 billion, down more than a. quarter from 2022.

A investigation released earlier this month revealed. that Codelco task hold-ups, accidents and deferred upkeep. have all contributed to its current depression, as some workers pinned. most of the blame on management and preparation.

Codelco said work was progressing at two flagship. jobs, the open-pit mine of Chuquicamata and the El Teniente. complex, but with hold-ups.

At Chuquicamata, an expanded efficient area had actually permitted. for increased extraction, however at a slower speed than at first. planned, Codelco noted.

At El Teniente, hold-ups included the building on a tunnel. for transporting minerals. Numerous projects in the complex are. expected to begin production through the course of this year,. with another slated for 2026.

The nationwide mining business has also been entrusted by the. government with leading future lithium projects in the South. American country, and is negotiating public-private contracts.

The government of President Gabriel Boric has said it will. reserve for majority control by means of Codelco two of Chile's the majority of. lithium-rich salt flats, Atacama and Maricunga.
