Panama president sees no environmental threat from copper at closed First Quantum mine

More than 100,000 metric lots of copper concentrate stuck at the closed First Quantum mine in Panama do not currently position an ecological danger, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino stated on Thursday.

The mine, one of the world's top sources of copper, was shut down in November after Panama's Supreme Court declared Canadian First Quantum's agreement with the country unconstitutional, a. move that followed environmental demonstrations.

Since then, commodities markets have been seeing to see. what choice Panama's government handles whether it will allow. the export of the 130,000 tons of copper concentrate left behind. after the mine's closure.

Mulino stated ecological authorities checked out the website a. little bit over a month back and concluded that the stocked copper. was ecologically safe for the moment. Environmentalists as. well as mining companies had raised concerns over risks from. leaving the copper on website.

I asked Minister (Juan Carlos) Navarro to conduct that. investigation, and he states there is no environmental danger. today, Mulino said at his weekly press conference.

He added that the government prepares to choose in January. whether First Quantum's proposed upkeep plan for the mine,. called Cobre Panama, can progress.

First Quantum declined to comment. The company in a. declaration in April called for instant elimination of the copper. concentrate to alleviate possible problems.

Due to extended storage pending export authorization,. increased drying and chain reactions that produce dangerous. gases and elevated temperature levels are being observed in. tracking, posing considerable health, security and ecological. dangers, the business stated in the April declaration.

A plan for getting rid of the copper needs to resolve payment for the. metal, in addition to an ongoing demonstration versus the mine by fishing. boats that are blocking the mine's pier, Mulino said.

If it needs to be secured, it has to be gotten, but. there also needs to be payment to us, Panama, since it is our. product extracted under a concession that no longer exists,. Mulino said.

All those things will eventually be part of the. detailed review of the issue, he stated.

Cobre Panama, when operational, represented 40% of First. Quantum's revenue and nearly 5% of Panama's GDP.
