India in talk with deal with increasing steel imports, steel minister states

India is in discussions to deal with greater steel imports, Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy stated on Wednesday, without sharing further details.

Increasing imports are a crucial concern for steelmakers even as need for the metal continues to rise, Kumaraswamy informed reporters at a market occasion.

India, the world's second greatest unrefined steel producer, was a net importer of steel through the ending March 2024, and remained a net importer from April to July.

China was the top steel exporter to India from April to July, followed by Japan and South Korea.

Greater imports have struck regional steel prices, which have fallen to their least expensive in more than three years, data from products consultancy BigMint showed.

Earlier in the month, Steel Minister Kumaraswamy had said his ministry will try to persuade the finance ministry to raise tariffs on steel imports, in a bid to secure domestic mills from a rise in cheaper imports from nations like China.

In August, India started an anti-dumping examination on specific steel products imported from Vietnam, in action to the advising of the nation's leading steelmakers, such as JSW Steel and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel.
