Miner MP Products gets $58.5 mln United States funding for Texas unusual earths plant

MP Materials has been awarded $ 58.5 million by the U.S. government to aid with the construction of its rare earth magnet manufacturing center in Fort Worth, Texas, the miner said on Monday.

The company expects the facility to begin producing completed magnets by late 2025. The items will be supplied to General Motors for its North American EV production.

CONTEXT

Last week, the Biden Administration revealed $4 billion in tax credits for over 100 projects across 35 states to improve production of clean energy devices and decrease greenhouse gas emissions at industrial centers.

Rare earths are a group of metals used to maker magnets that are discovered in electrical lorries, wind turbines and electronic devices.

MARKET RESPONSE

The company's shares increased 2.1% to $14.6 in morning trade.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

China, the world's top processor of uncommon earths, banned the export of innovation to make rare-earth magnets late in 2015.

The U.S. backed two Australian-listed uncommon earths tasks last month with up to $850 countless financing as Western countries construct a supply chain and wean themselves from dependence on China.

BY THE NUMBERS

China represents nearly 90% of global refined rare-earths output. The country exported 52,307 metric lots of the minerals in 2015, the greatest since 2018.
