New Petrobras CEO says president wants company to improve national economy

The president of Brazilian oil giant Petrobras, Madga Chambriard, stated the nation's president asked her to pursue increasing the country's economy while preserving success at the oil firm.

Chambriard, who took over as the state-run company's top executive after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva fired the previous CEO in May, stated at her formal installation on Wednesday that Petrobras' vision for Brazil is aligned with the president's top priorities.

Chambriard's position was echoed by Lula, who spoke during the event held at Petrobras' CENPES proving ground in Rio de Janeiro.

Nobody wants shareholders to lose one cent, stated Lula. No one wants Petrobras to be a loss-making business.

Petrobras shares plunged last month after Lula fired the former CEO Jean Paul Prates due to fears he would want to set up a new CEO that would enhance Brazil's economy at the cost of its shareholders.

To satisfy Lula's request, one of Chambriard's primary priorities is to speed up the company's $102 billion financial investment prepare for the 2024-2028 period, which she said has the potential to produce hundreds of thousands of tasks.

Last week, Chambriard revealed her new management group and appointed three directors with technical know-how and a long history in the country's state-run firms.

After the event on Wednesday, Chambriard informed journalists she does not see additional changes on the company's senior management personnel.
