New Zealand prepares for more storm damage following floods that killed one person

New Zealand is bracing itself for heavy rains after flooding swept through a regional centre, causing?power?outages and road collapses, while a body of a man was found in a vehicle submerged on the highway.

MetService New Zealand said that the 'weather system' is expected to intensify with heavy rains and winds up to 120 km/hr (75 mph), as well as waves of seven metres (22 feet).

Authorities declared a'state of emergency' and issued a severe weather alert for the entire east coast of the North Island, from the Coromandel Peninsula all the way to the Bay of Plenty, after heavy rains pounded Otorohanga District overnight. This agricultural region has about 10,000 residents, located 180 km (114 miles) south of Auckland.

Otorohanga district mayor Rodney?Dow called the news "devastating" for his community. He was referring to a man who died in his car. Authorities did not?give the name of the man.

Dow said at a press conference that "right now, our focus is to support those who have been affected by the flooding as well as emergency workers and agencies which are helping."

Around 2 p.m. (0100 GMT), local time, on Friday, rain began to batter Otorohanga. It worsened through the evening and reached 300mm (11.8 in) of rainfall within an hour. Dow reported that a pumping system intended to prevent flooding was strained by the torrential rain.

"A weather bomb just came across," he added.

Around 80 people were evacuated on Saturday, and the authorities opened an emergency centre at a local church. Local government officials started assessing extensive damage that Dow? described.

Residents who didn't evacuate were advised to stay at home and avoid flooding.

Images shared on social media show flooded semi-rural areas, and collapsed sections of road. Images showed a vehicle overpass covered with trees and debris where the water was supposed to have subsided.
