India asks business to fire-up power plants to satisfy increasing electrical power need

India has asked business to run underutilised gasbased power plants in May and June, and extend operations of imported coalbased plants till Oct. 15 to fulfill expected high need for electrical energy, according to two federal government orders.

The South Asian country signed up an 8% increase in electricity usage in the fiscal year that ended last month, and demand is anticipated to increase in the hot summertime.

In an order dated Friday, the federal government for the first time conjured up an emergency provision mandating companies to operate underutilised gas-based power plants by importing the fuel.

India has about 24 gigawatts of gas-based power plants that have been idling or underused for years due to absence of fuel. Power stations will be informed 2 weeks beforehand about the requirements so they can import gas, the order says.

Gas-based power plants are required to fulfill the anticipated surge in power intake in summer season, the order states.

Torrent and NTPC are amongst the huge gas-based power station companies.

In another order, seen on Saturday, the federal government invoked an emergency provision directing business such as Tata Power and Adani Power - which are operating imported coal-fired plants with a capacity of nearly 16 gigawatts - to continue operations.

The plants were at first enabled to run up until June 30.
