More than 1,000 NOAA scientists protest layoffs in Colorado

On Monday, over 1,000 protesters gathered in Boulder, Colorado to protest the Trump administration's decision to lay off what two employees claimed was upwards of 10% of the scientists at that agency.

Former U.S. David Skaggs is a Colorado Democrat who was elected to Congress in 1996. The NOAA building at Boulder bears his name. He told the crowd that he expected 100 people, but the police estimated the number to be over 1,000.

Skaggs stated that the much larger turnout was a reflection of the anxiety Americans feel as the Trump administration restructures the federal bureaucracy, cutting costs and staff.

Skaggs stated, "I wept in church yesterday for my country. It is overwhelming sad and distressing." We need to take a breath, gather our courage and fight for what we believe is right.

According to Congressional sources, the Trump administration fired more than 800 NOAA employees last week. Two current NOAA workers who were not fired at the rally in Boulder estimated that 10% out of the approximately 800 NOAA Boulder employees had been dismissed last week. Two employees who asked to remain anonymous cited their fear of losing their jobs.

Scientists say that cuts to NOAA will affect the quality and timely delivery of a wide range of services, including space weather forecasts which are used to predict disruptions in satellite operations, power grids and more. They also include life-saving warnings for wildfires, tornadoes and hurricanes.

Susan McLean was at the protest. She said that the dismissal of NOAA employees would make it harder to recruit talented scientists for federal jobs.

McLean stated that "we used to attract people despite our lower pay, because we had a great mission and the mission was valued by the public."

McLean stated that she worked at NOAA when the former president Bill Clinton made the last major effort to reduce the federal workforce. The cutbacks at that time were made in conjunction with managers from the different federal agencies, and over several years to prevent disruptions of vital services.

McLean stated that "those cuts were made with a scalpel." "This is done with a wrecking-ball." This is indiscriminate, and without any thought.

In the last election, 76.5% Boulder County voters chose former Vice President Kamala Harri compared to 20.8% Trump.

Brenna Raeder said, "This protest is an expression of how frustrated the people are." She was holding a sign that read "National Weather Service saves lives." It's insane to defund vital services like wildfire forecasts, which save lives in Colorado.

Demonstrators argued that the bipartisan defense of science in opposition to the Trump administration’s aggressive reductions in federal employment should be the cause.

NOAA didn't respond to an email request for comments on the layoffs or how many employees at its Boulder office had been terminated.

Project 2025 is a collection of conservative policy proposals that have been repeatedly aired as the Trump Administration takes shape. It says NOAA has "become one of the leading drivers of climate change alarmism and, as a result, is detrimental to future U.S. prosperity." prosperity." Project 2025 calls for the dissolution and downsizing of NOAA.

Another 1,000 protesters in Silver Spring, Maryland at a NOAA facility demanded the reinstatement for NOAA scientists who were fired.

NOAA is crucial for safe seafood we eat and weather forecasts that include dangerous hurricanes. "NOAA plays a vital role in our daily lives, and we must keep it strong", said demonstrator Mike Tidwell. (Reporting and editing by Donna Bryson, Sandra Maler, and Brad Brooks from Colorado)
