Majority of EU countries ask bloc to scale back deforestation law

Some 20 members of the European Union asked Brussels to downsize and possibly suspend the bloc's antideforestation law on Tuesday, saying the policy would harm farmers, in the most recent blowback versus Europe's. ecological program.

The EU law intends to root logging out of supply chains. for beef, soy and other farming items sold in Europe, so. that European consumers are not contributing to the destruction. of international forests from the Amazon to Southeast Asia.

Those rules equally use to European farmers, who will be. prohibited from exporting products cultivated on deforested or. degraded woodlands.

Farming ministers from 20 of the EU's 27 member. countries supported a call by Austria to modify the law, at a. meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, Austria's agriculture minister. Norbert Totschnig stated.

We now prompt the Commission for a short-lived suspension of. the guideline enabling a practical execution. accompanied by a modification of the regulation, Totschnig stated in. a declaration.

Three EU authorities confirmed to around 20 nations. had backed the call in the closed-door conference, with France,. Italy, Poland and Sweden amongst the fans.

EU leaders have thinned down numerous environmental measures. in an attempt to stop months of demonstrations by upset farmers over. concerns including EU green policies and inexpensive imports.

A European Commission spokesperson did not instantly. react to questions on whether Brussels will now modify the. law.

Austria's demands consist of that the problem for certifying. items as deforestation-free must be drastically lowered. within the EU and that the Dec. 30 due date for nations to. start abiding by the law should be postponed.

EU environment commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius had on. Monday questioned why nations had raised issues about the. policy a few months before EU Parliament elections in June, when. they had invested years negotiating the deforestation law and. approved it in 2015.

Obviously, we will listen to the arguments, but I honestly. do not see any problems, Sinkevicius told a press conference.

Farmers staged more demonstrations in Brussels on Tuesday to. accompany the farming minister's conference, jamming the EU. district with about 250 tractors and dropping sugar beets and. hay on to the streets.
