Nevada prison battle leaves three prisoners dead, 9 hospitalized

A Nevada maximumsecurity jail went into lockdown after a brawl that left 3 inmates dead and nine others hospitalized, officials stated.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo's office stated the brawl on Tuesday was gang related, Fox channel KVVU-TV in Las Vegas reported.

The deadly melee broke out on Tuesday afternoon at the Ely State Jail in a rural mining town some 250 miles north of Las Vegas. The jail, the state's only optimum security facility, is also the website of its death row.

No corrections officers were injured in the battle, authorities said in the declaration, which did not provide a cause for the battle or say the number of others may have been injured.

The 9 inmates who were hospitalized were stabbed, ABC affiliate KOLO-TV reported.

A representative for the Nevada Department of Corrections did not right away react to phone calls and email looking for more information.

It was unclear if the jail stayed on lockdown on Wednesday, but the Department of Correction's website stated that visitations were canceled forever at all state prisons.

Prison officials were concerned about retaliation, CBS affiliate KLAS-TV reported.

The Ely prison can hold 1,183 prisoners and has more than 400 worker positions. Nevada presently has 60 inmates on death row at the facility, according to the Death Penalty Info Center.

There have been 21 deaths across all Nevada prisons this year, according to the state's website, including two at the Ely prison.

The prison was the website of an inmate appetite strike in 2022, staged by lots of detainees who protested risky conditions and inadequate food.
