Costa Rica presses off organized power cuts as rains improve supply

Costa Rica's staterun electrical energy company ICE pressed back a prepared electrical energy allocating strategy till at least Friday, due to current rains increasing tanks that feed regional hydroelectric plants, the company announced late on Monday.

Last week, ICE blamed drought conditions that had cut power supplies for the requirement to provision, which it stated then would begin at the start of this week, with cuts of up to 3 hours daily however not impacting healthcare facilities, industry or other high-voltage consumers.

On Saturday, the company initially pressed off by a day the strategy for power cuts.

Costa Rica acquires about 70% of its electricity supply from hydroelectric plants.

In its Monday statement, ICE noted both improvement at tanks along with more powerful winds, another major source of power generation for Costa Rica's grid.

Current drought conditions to strike the Central American country have been partially attributed to the weather condition phenomenon known as El Nino, which ICE's electricity director described as the most extreme on record.
