Green group sues Tyson Foods for presumably false climate claims

An environmental group is suing Tyson Foods for apparently deceptive customers by saying it will reach netzero emissions by 2050 and marketing climatefriendly beef without meaningful strategies to accomplish those goals.

The suit was filed on Wednesday by the Washington-based Environmental Working Group (EWG) in D.C. Superior Court. Tyson did not immediately react to a Reuters request for comment.

WHY IT is necessary

Livestock production creates about 14.5% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, according to the United Nations Food and Farming Company. Livestock represent 65% of those emissions.

Tyson is among the largest meat processing companies in the United States. The business says it produces 20% of the country's. beef, pork, and chicken and that most of its emissions. are from beef production.

CONTEXT

In 2021, Tyson stated it would achieve net-zero emissions by. 2050 by increasing its usage of renewable energy and removing. deforestation in its supply chain, among other actions.

The company likewise markets a brand name of climate-friendly beef. it states is produced with 10% less emissions than traditional. beef.

In its suit, EWG alleges that Tyson has actually not provided a. rigorous plan for reaching its net zero objectives or details for its. lower-emission beef production and is thus deceptive customers. with the claims.

CRUCIAL QUOTE

These type of greenwashing claims are on the increase and. consumers have a right to understand the fact about their food. choices, said Carrie Apfel, an attorney with Earthjustice, on a. Wednesday press call.

Earthjustice is representing EWG in the fit alongside the. Animal Legal Defense Fund, Edelson PC, and FarmStand.
