Peru declares an emergency after a crime wave sweeps the capital and a singer is shot dead

The Peruvian government declared a state-of-emergency in Lima on Monday, and deployed soldiers into the streets to quell recent violence which claimed the life a popular musician.

After unknown assailants opened fire on the bus in which Paul Flores was riding, the death of this prominent cumbia singer sparked outrage amongst many. Flores was killed by a gunshot, according to the police.

Dina Boluarte, the president of Peru, was prompted by the crime wave to say that she wanted to see murderers receive death sentences, even though Peru allows execution only for traitors.

The 30-day Emergency Decree applies to Lima and the neighboring province of Callao, granting authorities additional powers in order to deploy military forces to combat lawlessness.

Peru has declared emergency in recent years when crime or unrest increases.

The government's actions on Monday come after weeks of increasing violence, which authorities blame on criminal groups, who often target businesses and transport companies. Authorities have also lauded recent arrests by gangs. (Reporting and editing by David Alire Garcia; Reporting by Marco Aquino)
