Italy's Snam gets 200 mln euro ESG loan to remodel gas pipeline

Italian gas grid operator Snam protected a 200 million euro ($ 216 million) loan linked to environmental, social and governance goals (ESG) from state lender CDP to remodel the gas pipeline linking the cities of Ravenna and Chieti in main Italy. The total revamp of the facilities, consisting of secondary lines, will be completed by 2027 and will likewise enable hydrogen transportation, Snam and CDP said in a joint declaration.

WHY IT MATTERS

Federal governments and energy companies around the world are positioning large bets on hydrogen playing a leading role in efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions and assist decarbonise energy-intensive industries.

The Ravenna-Chieti pipeline will be linked to the Adriatic line, which is focused on increasing capacity to transfer gas from southern Italy - where the fuel shows up from Africa - to the industrialised north and abroad.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Ravenna-Chieti gas pipeline consists of 292 kilometres of primary pipeline and 133 kilometres of secondary lines.

Snam plans to invest 11.5 billion euros
