Sources: Boko Haram suspects capture 13 Nigerian soldiers and kill seven,

Two security sources reported that suspected Boko Haram militants captured and killed seven Nigerian soldiers, including their commanding officer, on Monday morning in northeastern Borno State.

Sources said that the soldiers were 'on patrol? in the Damasak region of Borno at 1400 GMT, when they came across the militants. The sources said that seven soldiers were killed during a gunfight, while 11 managed to escape. However, 13 soldiers, including the commanding officers, were captured.

A security source briefed about the incident said, "The major fought hard but he was eventually captured and his cell phone was taken by Boko Haram."

Sources said that when the troops returned to camp and called the number, someone answered who claimed to be a Boko Haram member and told them the major and other soldiers were in the group's custody.

The military said that a rescue team has since located the bodies of seven soldiers who have died, but not the missing troops.

A Nigerian Army spokeswoman did not respond immediately to a comment request.

The Nigerian army has launched an offensive against militants who have taken control of areas in the northeast.

Boko Haram, and its splinter group, have mounted large-scale attacks despite?repeated assaults. They exploited difficult terrain, porous borders, and the limited presence of state in certain parts of the arid north.

Boko Haram is a jihadist organization that emerged in the northeastern part of Nigeria in 2009. It has killed thousands and forced millions to flee across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

Since then, the group has split. One faction has aligned with Islamic State and formed Islamic State West Africa Province. (ISWAP), a group that has been increasingly targeting military bases over the past few years.
