At least 17 people killed in India Vedanta plant explosion

A government official reported that at least 17 people were killed and 36 injured in a suspected boiler explosion at a power plant operated by India's Vedanta Limited in the central Indian State of Chhattisgarh.

Amrit Topno, senior administration official at the plant, said that operations had been suspended following the explosion.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Singhitarai. This is about 230 km away (143 miles) from the state capital, Raipur.

The plant's shutdown comes at a time when?India is preparing for a more harsh summer. The government has halted the maintenance of nearly ten gigawatts of coal plant capacity due to a lack of gas supply caused by the Mideast conflict.

District Superintendent of Police PK thakur said that the explosion was probably caused by an overheating boiler tube.

Vedanta released a statement saying that an "unfortunate incident" occurred at the Singhitarai Plant and that a thorough investigation was underway to find out what caused it.

Vedanta stated that NTPC-GE Power Services maintains and operates the plant.

Vedanta purchased the coal power plant of 1,200 MW through a bankruptcy procedure?in 2022. Only 600 MW of the plant has been operational. Sethuraman NR wrote the article, with additional reporting from Abhirami G, in Bengaluru. Kim Coghill, Sherry Jacin-Phillips, and Anil D’Silva edited it.
