Indian mining, steelmakers' operating costs might surge after leading court judgment, states Fitch Rankings

Indian metal and mining companies' operating costs are most likely to increase considerably if state federal governments enforce additional mining taxes in the wake of a Supreme Court judgment, Fitch Scores stated in a note on Monday. India's leading court late last month promoted the right for state federal governments to impose taxes on minerals extraction and last week allowed them to do so restrospectively, going back to April 1, 2005. The taxes would be paid over a duration of 12 years in instalments beginning with April 1, 2026, the court ruled.

The case followed a long-running disagreement in between Indian states and the federal government over states' right to enforce taxes on minerals.
