Copper prices drop from 12-week highs as Chinese demand is tempered

After a recent rally of three sessions, copper prices fell on Thursday, after reaching a new '12-week high. The price increase dampened demand from the top consumer, China, and investors were taking profits. This was offset by tightening supply outside of the United States.

Benchmark?copper? on the LME dropped 0.35% at $7,060.50 per metric ton by 0700 GMT after reaching $14,178 an hour earlier, its highest level since May 13.

The most active copper contract on SHFE closed at 107330 yuan (15,903.33) per ton after briefly reaching the highest price since May 2014.

Yangshan Copper Premium Since July 22, a measure of Chinese appetite for copper imports has dropped. It reached $106 per ton on Tuesday, an indication that buyer resistance is increasing as prices rise.

Traders said that the pullback was also due to profit-taking after LME copper rose above $14,000.

Nickel fell after SMM (a Chinese information hub) reported that Weda Bay Nickel received an additional nickel ore production quota for the second half of?25million tons. Eramet, a WBN owner, stated that the mine had suspended production at the end of May, after exhausting its initial RKAB for 2026 of 12 million tonnes, and they were seeking a larger allocation from Indonesian authorities.

LME nickel dropped 3.06%, to $16,590 per ton. SHFE nickel ended the day at 127460 yuan, a?2.69% decline.

Other?metals: LME aluminium dropped 0.14%.?Zinc fell 0.11%. Lead lost 0.19%. Tin declined 1.19%.

Aluminium rose by 0.19% on SHFE. Zinc gained 1.37%. Lead added 0.06%. Tin edged up by 0.03%.
