India top court's order permitting states to gather past dues to injure miners, govt authorities says

Indian top court's order that permits states to gather previous tax fees from mining business will have a big financial impact on these firms and affect financial investments, a senior mines ministry authorities, who did not wish to be named, told Reuters on Wednesday.

The order is anticipated to have an impact of around 1 trillion rupees ($ 11.91 billion) on mining companies, the authorities added, without specifying the timeline of the effect.

India's Supreme Court on Wednesday enabled state federal governments to gather mining business' tax charges pending from April 1, 2005.

The time for payment or the demand of tax will be staggered in installments over a duration of 12 years, starting from April 1, 2026, the top court stated.

This will affect the future of mining unless the government brings legislation to overcome this judgement, said R.K. Sharma, secretary general of the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries.
