Gunvor partner with VARO to build sustainable air travel fuel facility in Rotterdam

Worldwide energy trader Gunvor Group on Thursday said it will sign up with VARO Energy to develop a large scale sustainable aviation fuel manufacturing center at the Gunvor Energy Rotterdam website through a proposed joint venture.

Under the arrangement, VARO and Gunvor will equally share the expenses and dangers to develop the plant until the final financial investment decision. Following a joint final financial investment decision and regulative approvals, they will form a job business similarly owned by both, Gunvor stated.

Considering that VARO's intial statement on the job in September in 2015, there has been considerable development and the Front-End Engineering Style stage is anticipated to be completed in the last quarter this year, the energy trader said.

The production center in Rotterdam, with capacity of 350 kt per year, aims to produce enough sustainable air travel fuel to fulfill up to 7% of the European Union's requirement by 2030, Gunvor stated.

The center is developed to process various feedstocks and produce either sustainable air travel fuel or hydrotreated grease, allowing flexibility based upon market conditions and regulative requirements, it stated.

Found at Gunvor Energy Rotterdam's brownfield website, the facility will gain from existing facilities, including transport, pipelines, utilities, port facilities, and distance to key Northern European markets, Gunvor stated.

Gunvor operates a 75,000 barrel-per-day oil refinery at Rotterdam.
