Greece tames wildfire on Crete, authorities on alert

Greece brought a wildfire under control on the island of Crete on Saturday that required dozens to flee their homes, the fire department said, with authorities on alert due to strong winds.

Authorities bought the preventive evacuation of the towns of Achlia, Galini, Agia Fotia and Mavros Kolimpos, as the blaze closed in on some homes.

The fire has gone away significantly after the efforts of hundreds of firemens, a fire service official told . It was the first huge one near a suburb this year.

Researchers fear that the season might be harmful considered that Greece has just had its hottest winter on record, leaving much of the land warm and dry.

Earlier in the day a fireman and a local homeowner were taken to hospital with minor injuries. About 150 firemens were fighting the forest fire on the ground, helped by 3 helicopters.

The civil security ministry has actually set authorities on alert due to strong winds anticipated in next coming days and after dozens of smaller sized forest fires broke out on Saturday.

Wildfires prevail in the Mediterranean nation. In 2015 a wildfire burning in northeastern Greece for 11 days ruined an area bigger than New york city City and killed 20 people.
