Polish farmers begin cravings strike over EU Green Deal

5 Polish farmers have actually gone on hunger strike over European Union environmental guidelines they say are driving them out of business.

Farmers in Poland and in other places in the bloc have actually been protesting in current months versus cheap food imports from Ukraine and restrictions put on them by the EU's Green Offer to tackle environment modification.

A group of up to 14 farmers occupied Poland's parliament on Thursday and on Monday the 5 who stayed there said they would not eat till they secured a meeting with Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

We stand out above all versus the policies of the European Union ... and today we are beginning our hunger strike, farmer Jaroslaw Zareba, 37, stated.

Farmers have actually already won concessions from the EU over the Green Offer and from the Polish federal government, which said it would pay 2.1 billion zlotys ($ 529 million) in subsidies to compensate them for low grain rates, but many say it is not enough.

The Green Offer ... impacts our agriculture extremely, extremely much, Zareba said. There are a lot of regulations that affect ... our success and the cost of our items.

Deputy Farming Minister Michal Kolodziejczak said the protesters in parliament did not represent the majority of farmers, who he said had actually stopped opposing due to the measures implemented to assist them.

I don't recommend that the prime minister consults with the agents of what is more political chutzpah and not agents of farmers, he informed state broadcaster Polskie Radio 24.

Last month farmers chose to unblock border crossings with Ukraine, lifting a blockade that had dragged on for months, soured bilateral relations and buffeted Ukraine's trade.
