Minnesota Power reaches electrical rate settlement with state agencies, waits for MPUC approval

U.S. power utility and renewable energy developer Allete stated on Friday that its Minnesota electric utility has reached a settlement on its 2024 electrical rate proposition with the Minnesota Department of Commerce, the state's Chief law officer's Office and large power customers.

If authorized by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission ( MPUC), the arrangement would set the last rate boosts of about 4.9% for residential and small business consumers and about 4.4% for commercial and large industrial consumers.

Minnesota Power offers electrical service in northeastern Minnesota for 150,000 clients, 14 towns and a few of the largest industrial consumers in the United States.

The energy had submitted its rate proposal in November 2023, asking for an increase of $89 million in earnings to support financial investments for a clean-energy shift.

The MPUC has approved an interim rate increase, which went into impact on Jan. 1, of 8.6%, or about $8 each month for the average property client over the 2023 rates.

With the last authorized rate being lower than the interim rate, the business said it would refund the difference to clients with interest.
