UN agency: Extreme heat is becoming more intense and frequent

The U.N. weather agency reported on Tuesday that extreme heat periods are becoming more intense, frequent and longer-lasting as climate change warms up the planet. It noted changes since 1976's famously hot European Summer. The fifth heatwave in Europe is affecting parts of Europe during a summer that has been marked by record temperatures, drought and wildfires.

John Kennedy, head of climate information at the World Meteorological Organization, said in a Geneva press conference that extreme heat was becoming more common, intense and lasting longer than it did in cooler climates in the past.

Kennedy explained that the pattern of heat across Europe - the fastest-warming continent in the world - reflects the interaction of a persistent pattern high-pressure systems throughout the Northern Hemisphere with a?warmer climate.

High-pressure systems trap warm?air, reduce cloud coverage and block cooler??air from moving into large regions, allowing heat to build up over large areas for days or even weeks. El Nino, a naturally occurring climate pattern which typically increases global temperatures, is not contributing to Europe’s heat this summer because conditions in tropical Pacific are neutral, he said.

Changes in the past five decades

Kennedy said that the pattern of high and low pressures systems in June 1976 was similar to what we saw this year. However, he added that the results were different due to decades of global heating.

He said that in 1976, there were only a handful of areas with temperatures above the average. Today, however "the picture has been reversed," with temperatures above average across most of the world and just a few "isolated" cooler regions.

Kennedy said that the extreme heat in the Mediterranean Sea and waters west of Europe was amplifying the temperatures on land. Marine heatwaves in Mediterranean Sea and west European waters are fueling the hotter conditions on earth by "providing an additional background warmth to persistent high-pressure system,? he said.

The heat was intensified by the dry ground because soils heated up more quickly when moisture is drained.

Kennedy said that "a lot of these factors have come together to create the record heat we are experiencing this year." Reporting by Olivia Le Poidevin, Editing by Keith Weir
