In Lula's Brazil, Amazon deforestation increases for very first time in 15 months

Deforestation in Brazil's. Amazon rose in July, breaking a 15month streak of falling. destruction under President Luiz Inacio da Silva, initial. government data show, amid a strike by environmental employees.

Roughly 572 square km of jungle were cleared in the first 26. days of July, currently 14% higher than the 500 square km in the. whole of July last year, according to initial information from. federal government area research study agency Inpe launched on Friday.

The Environment Ministry and Science Ministry were to hold a. joint press conference in the future Wednesday to announce the Inpe. data for the complete month of July.

In spite of the increase, Amazon logging levels are still. far lower under Lula than his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

Amazon logging in July 2022, the in 2015 under. Bolsonaro, were nearly 3 times as high as the partial information. for July 2024.

Amazon logging last increased in February and March. 2023, quickly after Lula took workplace.

The rise remains in part due to an environment workers' strike. that started in June, that has dramatically cut the. enforcement of laws against logging, said Wallace Lopes, a. leader with environmental employees union Ascema.

The strike has absolutely affected the increase in the. ( deforestation) information, said Lopes.

The strike involves both the primary federal environmental. enforcement company Ibama and the parks service Icmbio.

When contacted for a comment, Lula's workplace did. not right away respond. The Environment Ministry will not. discuss the preliminary information prior to the press conference, a. spokesperson said.

Lula took workplace in January 2023 on a promise to end. deforestation by 2030 after skyrocketing levels of damage under. Bolsonaro. That dedication is the centerpiece of his quote to. bring back Brazil's climate qualifications, as the Amazon soaks up vast. amounts of greenhouse gas.

The data comes as Brazil's Amazon jungle has had a hard time. with many fires, amidst a drought in the region fanned by. climate modification. The fire season typically peaks in August and. September.

Firefighting efforts were not being affected by the strikes. performed by environment workers.
