The new EU Business Envoy resigns after criticism

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said that her choice for the EU's next business envoy has decided to not take up the position after critics compared the appointment with cronyism.

The European Commission (the EU's executive arm) has confirmed that it followed the rules when selecting Markus Pieper as the special envoy to represent small and medium businesses. Pieper is a German lawmaker who belongs to von der Leyen’s centre-right German party.

"The President respects Markus Pieper for his decision to not take up the post of SME Envoy as planned on 16 April. Markus Pieper has proven himself to be an expert in SMEs, and he won the multi-stage selection procedure," von der Leyen’s spokesperson stated in a Monday evening statement.

Other parties' opponents of Von der Leyen have pointed out media reports that said the Commission had rejected two other candidates with higher scores than Pieper during the initial selection process.

Last week, the European Parliament approved a document calling on his Commission to revoke his appointment.

Pieper said to the Handelsblatt newspaper that his appointment was also complicated by France's EU commissioner Thierry Breton who is responsible for EU Industry Policy.

Pieper was quoted in the newspaper as saying "I do not see any way that I can meet the legitimate expectations of the office."

Pieper's Office did not respond immediately to a comment request on Monday evening.

Von der Leyen’s spokesperson stated that the EU Commission chief had suspended the reopening the selection process for the role until the European Parliament elections in June. Following the election, a new European Parliament will be formed and a Commission.
