US Justice Department charges Ohio man with threatening to kill JDVance

A federal grand jury returned a criminal indictment against a man aged 33 for threatening to kill the?U.S. The Justice Department announced on Friday that Vice President JDVance visited the Ohio region in January.

The Justice Department released a statement accusing Shannon Mathre of Toledo, Ohio of threatening to kill Vance and inflict physical harm on him.

According to the Justice Department's indictment, Mathre said: "I will find out where (the vice president is) going to be. I will use my M14 automatic gun and kill him."

Mathre was arrested by U.S. Secret Service Agents on Friday. Mathre's representative could not be immediately reached.

In recent years, experts have raised alarm over political violence and violence threats in the polarized U.S. A January 6, 2021 rioter who was pardoned and accused of threatening the death of U.S. House of Representatives minority leader Hakeem Jeffreys pleaded guilty this week to a harassment charge.

The Justice Department stated that while investigating Mathre's alleged threats, federal investigators?also found multiple files of child abuse materials in his possession.

Mathre appeared for the first time before a U.S. magistrate judge for the Northern District of Ohio, on Friday. He remains in custody until a hearing for detention scheduled for Tuesday.

The Justice Department stated that if Mathre is found guilty of the charges, he could face a maximum of five years in prison, and a maximum fine of $250,000. This would be for the crime of threatening the vice president's life. If Mathre is found guilty of the charge of child sexual abuse material, he faces up to 20 years in jail and a maximum fine of $250,000.
