  What's important in the U.S. and Global Markets Today By Mike Dolan. Editor-at-Large for Finance and Markets Gulf tensions flared up on Monday, as U.S. efforts to guide ships through the Strait of Hormuz were met with resistance by Iran. This included an attack on an oil port in the UAE. Crude prices soared in response to the news, but have since eased slightly as we head into Tuesday. The markets are torn by the geopolitical uncertainty and the dramatic upgrade to U.S. AI spending and earnings forecasts. Below, I'll go into more detail. GULF BINGE, AI SINGE Oil prices rose by around 6% on Monday and major U.S. indices fell as fresh U.S. - Iran exchanges indicated that we may be seeing the return of an hot war. Brent and WTI crude oil settled at $114 per barrel and $106 per barrel, respectively. Reports that a U.S. flagged vehicle carrier was escorted by the U.S. Military out of the Strait pushed crude prices down and helped calm the markets on Tuesday morning. Wall Street futures opened in the green just before the bell rang, and European shares rose on the back of positive earnings. Asian shares dipped in holiday-thinned trade, with Japan and South Korea closed. Investors are hoping that the geopolitical crisis does not escalate any further so they can focus on what is proving to another 'blockbuster' earnings season. The full-year S&P 500 growth forecasts were revised up to 23% from just 18% a month earlier. Morgan Stanley's latest upgrade to AI spending estimates was the main driver. Morgan Stanley believes that the capex growth for the top five "hyperscalers" will exceed $800 billion in this year, and $1.1 trillion the following year. Goldman Sachs estimates that the total spend up to 2031 could be $7.6 trillion. AMD, Pfizer, and KKR are among the U.S. firms that will report their earnings today. The markets are also keeping an eye on the transatlantic tensions following President Trump's threat to increase tariffs on EU car imports to 25% late last week. This dragged the shares of European automakers down by about 2% on Monday. Today, the JOLTS data on job openings for March will kick off a busy week of labor market data in the United States. Investors are puzzled by GameStop's $56 billion offer for eBay, the online retailer. The video game retailer gained fame as a'meme stock" in '2021. Chart of the Day On Tuesday, Australia's central bank raised rates for the third time in this year. The rate was returned to its post-pandemic peak of 4.35%. They also warned that inflation would continue to be sticky due the Middle East conflict unleashing a global oil crisis. Money markets indicate that there is a 15% probability of another move in June. However, an increase to 4.6% by September has been fully priced in. This would be the largest since late 2011. • IAEA: drones damaged equipment at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant in Ukraine

  The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that a drone had 'damaged' the meteorological monitoring equipment in a Russian-owned Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant located in southeast Ukraine. In the first weeks of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian forces seized Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest nuclear power plant with six reactors. Since then, both sides have accused each other of taking military actions that could compromise the safety of the plant. IAEA posted on X that?a team from its experts visited the station's External Radiation Control Laboratory?, a day after Russian management claimed the plant had been struck by a drone. The IAEA's nuclear watchdog said that the team had observed damage to the laboratory's weather monitoring equipment, which was "no longer operational." In the statement, IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi issued a new appeal for "maximum military restraint around all nuclear facilities in order to avoid safety risk". Since the start of the conflict, drones have 'hit the plant several times. On Sunday, the plant's management said that damage was?minor and operations were unaffected. The IAEA announced last week that it was attempting to arrange a local truce to allow repair work to be done. Grossi has made several visits to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant since it came under Russian control. The IAEA also has observers in place at Zaporizhzhia as well as Ukraine's other three working nuclear stations. The U.S., however, denied Iranian claims that it was hit by missiles. This came after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. was going to begin helping ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz. The yen briefly rose?against?the dollar, as traders waited for more buying by Japan's Ministry of Finance following a suspected intervention last Thursday. Below, I'll go into more detail. STRAIT TALK Prior to the reports of the U.S. Warship being turned away from the Strait of Hormuz, on Monday President Trump described a plan for releasing stranded ships in the strait on Sunday as a "humanitarian gesture". The mechanics of the plan were left vague by Trump, but U.S. Central Command provided a sense for its size, stating that it would include 15,000 military personnel, and more than 100 aircraft, both land- and sea-based. Brent traded at $112/bbl, and WTI was around $106/bbl. Iran warned earlier that foreign forces crossing the Strait would be attacked. Iranian state media reported on Sunday that Washington had sent a reply, via Pakistan to Tehran's 14 point proposal to end the conflict - a proposal that Trump stated he would likely reject. As a result of the lack of progress in a 'peace deal', with the main sticking point being timing of the nuclear talks, the Gulf is likely to remain in a state of stalemate. The yen jumped again abruptly?on monday, reaching 155.7 per dollar before reversing course. This fuels speculation about another round of Japanese purchases after last week's apparent interventions, where the authorities may have spent up to $35 billion in order to support the flagging currency. Asia's stocks were up on Monday. South Korea's KOSPI, a tech-heavy index, surged almost 5%. SK Hynix's shares rose more than 12% as a result of the rising AI capital expenditures by U.S. technology firms. Japan's markets will be closed for Golden Week until Wednesday. After the opening, European shares dipped slightly. Automakers were under pressure following President Trump's Friday announcement that he will raise auto tariffs again. This is another crucial week for macro-data and earnings. Friday, the U.S. Non-farm Payrolls Report will be released. Median forecasts predict a growth of 60,000 jobs, which is well below March's 178,000. Despite the Fed's recent hawkish stance, the report is unlikely going to bring back hopes of rate cuts in 2019. This week, tech giants AMD, Super Micro Computer, and Palantir are due to report their?earnings. Spirit Airlines, a budget airline in the United States, ceased operation over the weekend when it failed to get creditor support for an American government bailout plan. This airline collapse, following a double-digit increase in fuel prices during the Iran War, is one of the last options for low-income Americans to travel by air. It could be considered the first corporate victim of the Iran War. Oil tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is down dramatically since the beginning of the war. Several ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks and days, but average flows are still well below normal. • UAE announces it will discuss currency swap lines with US

  On 'Monday, the United Arab Emirates announced that it is in talks with the United States about a currency exchange line. "We are having this discussion and conversation with many.?It's a part of an elite group with whom the U.S. has this swap policy. "They only have it with five countries," Thani al Zeyoudi told a conference in Abu Dhabi. "To be part of this group means that the transactions...?trade, investment between both nations reach an level where that exchange is highly necessary...?so (it) is an elite issue, it's not about bailing-out," he said at the "Make It In The Emirates" conference. Currency swap lines allow central banks to exchange currencies without having to use foreign exchange markets. This reduces transaction costs and exchange rate risk for international trade. The U.S. Federal Reserve maintains permanent central bank currency exchange lines with five major central banks: the Bank of Canada (Bank of Japan), the European Central Bank (ECB), the Bank of England, and the Swiss National Bank. U.S. Treasury secretary Scott?Bessent stated last month that allies from the Gulf region, Asia and Europe had requested currency exchange?lines to deal with the?impact of the Middle East conflict. The conflict, which began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran?on February 28th, has shut down the Strait of Hormuz. This is a crucial chokepoint where about 20% of oil and LNG shipments travel, and this has pushed up oil prices. Al Zeyoudi?did not provide any further details about?the discussion, the size or the timeline for an agreement regarding the currency swap line? with the United States. • MORNING BID AMERICA-Oil fears shroud tech splurge

  What's important in the U.S. and international markets today by Mike Dolan, Editor at Large,?Finance and Markets The markets can't ignore the new surge in oil prices due to the Iran war. The global crude oil prices rose to their highest levels since the beginning of the war amid reports that Washington is considering a return to military action in order to break the impasse. The price of the June Brent futures contract hit a four-year high of $126 per barrel on the last day, and the new benchmark for July surged up to $115/bbl, before falling back. The Fed's Wednesday hawkish stance was largely influenced by the fuel price squeeze. Below, I'll go into more detail. OIL FEAR SHROUDS THE TECH SPLURGE On Wednesday, the Fed kept rates the same. However, three regional presidents voted in favor of removing references to "easing bias" from its statement. Jerome Powell, the outgoing chair of the Fed, surprised many when he announced that he would stay on in a board position - at least temporarily - once his chairmanship ended next month. Powell's tenure on the board will last until the early part of 2028. This means that there won't be a vacancy in the board immediately for President Trump. Futures markets have eliminated all bets that the Fed will ease this year. There is a 1 in 3 chance of a rate increase by April next year. Treasury yields have risen again. The 30-year yield briefly topped 5% for the firs time since September. The dollar briefly jumped, but was knocked back below 160 yen due to Japanese intervention fears. Today, the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of England (BoE) will announce their rates. Both are expected to hold policy, but also warn of inflationary pressures related to oil. Meanwhile, after the Wednesday bell, mega-cap earnings swept in. Alphabet's share price soared by more than 6 percent on the back of its impressive cloud business and its beating. Meta, however, fell more than 6 percent as investors worried about its recent capex boost. Share price reactions were subdued to Microsoft and Amazon's results, but there was no major red or green flag in the massive AI buildout. The spending by the "hyperscalers" this year will likely top $700 billion. The bill may be justified, or it may not. But the demand for AI equipment and chips will continue to rise for the time being while the final outcome of the massive capex is still being assessed. Finaly, Asian shares dropped?on Thursday's renewed oil surge, while European stocks opened lower and Wall Street Futures were mixed. Chart of the Day South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics announced record quarterly profits driven by a?jump of 49-fold in chip income. It said it expects supply shortages to worsen next year, as clients invest more on AI. The results come just a day after U.S. megacaps Microsoft Alphabet Amazon and Meta revealed that their 2026 capex plans have now topped $700 billion.   The Puerto Rico Basketball Federation announced on Tuesday that the legendary Puerto Rican basketball player Jose "Piculin Ortiz" died aged 62, after fighting colorectal carcinoma for several years. Your legacy will continue to live on every court, and in each generation that you inspired. Ortiz was a Puerto Rican born in Aibonito on October 25, 1964. He was 2.08 meters high when he became a dominant player in Puerto Rico's local league. Ortiz, who played college basketball for Oregon State University, was selected 15th by the Utah Jazz in the?NBA draft. He began his professional career in Europe with CAI Zaragoza, in Spain. Later, he briefly played for the Utah Jazz. After his NBA stint, Ortiz returned home to Europe and established a successful career in Spain. He played for prestigious clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Festina Andorra, and Unicaja Malaga. He played in Greece and finished his career in Spain. Ortiz has been a member of the Puerto Rican national team for more than two decades. He was part of the team that shocked the United States in 2004 at the Athens Olympics. This is one of "the most significant" results in Puerto Rican sport history. In 2019, he was inducted into FIBA Hall of Fame. In his later years, he also had a 'failed run for political office' and legal problems. • Portugal prepares draft bill for windfall tax on energy firms

  Portugal's Finance Minister Joaquim Mirando Sarmento announced on Tuesday that the government would ask parliament for approval to impose a "windfall tax" on energy companies who benefited from an increase in energy prices due to the Iran War. A MORE PESSIMISTIC PENSION The survey also revealed that 32% of respondents were pessimistic regarding the medium-term economic outlook. They believe the economy will worsen over the next year as the Iran War exposes the vulnerabilities in global supply chain. This is an 8-point increase from DIHK's last survey, which was officially called the AHK World Business Outlook and conducted before the U.S. vs. Israel war with Iran broke out at the end of February. "This is not just an economic slowdown. "Uncertainty has become the main factor," said?Treier. The authors of the survey said that the geographical impact on German companies with overseas operations is dependent on their dependence on oil and natural gas imports from Gulf Region. The majority of companies in Asia-Pacific, including China, and those 'closest to conflict zones', are sceptical regarding the months ahead. Benchmark 'three-month copper at the London Metal Exchange increased 0.4% to $13,053 a metric ton, in open-outcry official trading after reaching its lowest level since March 13 at $12 780. Shanghai Futures Exchange was closed on Labour Day, which has a pronounced impact on trading. Since the Iran War, copper prices have been on the decline. The slowing of economic growth may affect demand for metals used in construction and electric vehicles, as well as artificial intelligence data centers. On Monday, the U.S. and Iran traded?fire as they fought for control of Strait of Hormuz. Ewa 'Manthey, commodities analyst at ING, said that the escalation between Iran and the U.S. has rekindled concerns about a broader shock - high energy prices, tighter conditions in finance, and a weakened industrial demand. She added that many investors believe the long-term outlook of copper is bullish and some buy at the lowest prices. COMEX copper futures in the U.S. gained 2.5%, to $5.99 per lb. This represents a small premium of around $130 per ton over LME Copper. COMEX ?inventories On Monday, the number of short tons (or 558,692 tons metric tons) reached a record high, with 615,852 short tonnes (558,692 tons metric tons), more than doubling in just eight months. LME zinc is up 0.4% to $3,362 per ton in official activity. This seems to ignore the news that two people died in an explosion in Kazakhstan's largest zinc production facility, owned by Glencore. • Oil dips as stocks rise on optimism from investors

  The global stock market rose on Tuesday as a result of a string of strong earnings. Meanwhile, the oil price remained above $100 per barrel due to the'simmering hostilities' between the U.S.A. and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. The yen was also on traders' minds after it briefly rose in the previous session, fueling speculation about another round of Tokyo intervention. The STOXX 600 index rose 0.5% in Europe. This was boosted by Anheuser-Busch shares, which surpassed expectations with their first-quarter results. Also, Unicredit, an Italian lender, reported record profits for the quarter. U.S. and Iran launched dueling maritime blockades in the Gulf as they fought for control of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. This came shortly after U.S. president Donald Trump launched an effort to move stranded ships and tankers through the crucial energy-trade chokepoint. Maersk reported that the Alliance Fairfax, an U.S. flagged vehicle carrier operated by Farrell Lines, left the Gulf on Monday via the Strait of Hormuz, accompanied by U.S. Military assets. Oil prices, which have been slipping below the high of $115 per barrel on Monday, gave some relief to stocks and other risky assets. The renewed hostilities still jolted the markets and served to remind them that the Middle East war is far from over. Brent crude futures dropped 1.5% to $112.74 per barrel after having risen in the previous session due to increased concerns about supply disruption. The markets may be relieved today after President Trump's comments overnight that the conflict could last for two or three more weeks. Markets are likely to be sceptical, however, due to the recent escalation, and the multiple extensions of timelines for ending hostilities, since the conflict started," ING's head of commodities strategy Warren Patterson stated. S&P Global Market Intelligence data showed that 83% of S&P500 companies who have already reported had beaten the EPS estimates, and 78.2% surpassed revenue estimates. LSEG data indicates that earnings growth is expected to reach 18% for the S&P 500 in the first quarter. This compares with estimates of 12.8% a month ago. Nasdaq and S&P futures both rose by 0.7%, indicating a rebound from Monday's negative closing. Jeff Buchbinder is the chief equity strategist of LPL Financial. He said that AI-driven expenditures will continue to drive earnings growth for S&P 500, with the technology sector leading. YEN INTERVENTION MONITORING The yen has been slightly weaker today, with the dollar up by?0.3% to 157.736, following Monday's brief surge which saw the Japanese currency reach an intraday peak of 155.69. Satsuki Katayama, the Japanese Finance Minister, spoke out on Monday against speculative foreign exchange trading. This left'market participants alert to further intervention following reports that Tokyo intervened on Thursday to prop up their ailing currency. Abbas Keshvani is Asia Macro Strategist for RBC Capital Markets. He said that authorities could intervene again, if the dollar/yen continued to test 160. They have always defended this level. In 2022, Tokyo fired three volleys in just a few weeks. He said: "We believe that the intervention will only act as a 'lid on USD/JPY and not a catalyst to protracted yen strength." The Australian dollar, which is widely used as a currency, last traded at $0.7161 after the Reserve Bank of Australia raised rates on Tuesday for the third time in this year, a move that was widely anticipated. Spot gold, meanwhile, rose 1% above the low of $4,500 on Monday, which was the lowest level since March 31, to reach $4,565 per ounce. • Farage's Reform focuses on Scotland and Wales as part of the battle for Britain

  James Buchan has swallowed up his animosity towards Nigel Farage, a former Peterhead fisherman. The 38-year old's distrust for populist Reform UK leader, a Brexit campaigner, has been overshadowed by his concerns about the local economy. He said that the British government had destroyed the local economy through decades of disastrous policy. He plans to vote Reform this week for the first-time, believing that the party's promises to maximize oil and gas production in North Sea, as well as to restrict access to European fishing boats, are the best way to revive the fortunes of the town. Buchan said, "Some areas around here look like slums," as he sat on the high street getting his hair cut. He then rose to?point out boarded shops. As he was having his hair cut on the high-street, Buchan rose to point out boarded up shops. "We have to find a solution to get the money flowing again in our economy." Voters such as Buchan are set to?drive a surge in support for Reform during this week's elections for the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments as well as local Councils throughout England. Reform has a large lead in the national polls, with a significant advantage over both Labour and Conservatives. A general election is due to be held by 2029. After Brexit, the party's rise was largely driven primarily by English support. Now, it is making gains in Scotland and Wales. This reflects a rejection of UK's two-party traditional system. Polls show that Reform will likely become the official opponent in Scotland and Wales of the local parties, Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru. Polls indicate that Reform's vote share in Scotland will jump from 0.2% to almost 30%, and in Wales it is expected to increase from 1% to around 20%. Labour will lose votes, while the Conservatives are reduced to just a few seats. Both nations have a history of being left-leaning and have been fertile grounds for Reform's populist message. They should rip apart decades-old systems, expel "liberal establishment" elites, and clamp down on immigration in order to focus more on local issues. Bargoed is a town located in the Welsh Valleys. The high street has many boarded up shops. According to the Welsh Government, the community was ruined by the closing of a mine in the 1970s. In the shabby local pub, the supporters of the insurgents are vocal in private, if not in public. Wayne Hunt, 60 years old, a former stage builder, said that this is a Reform pub. He preferred Plaid, because it's more Welsh. Conrad Ritchie is the Reform candidate for Banffshire & Buchan, in the north of Scotland, and he hopes to win a seat at Holyrood, the Scottish parliament. He said that the regional elections are a crucial part of the party's bid for national power. He added, "This is yet another building block." "And, I think that, you know, when the general elections, which will not be too distant, then I reckon we have a good chance to become the next ruling party." Labour spokespeople in Scotland and Wales said that Reform will divide communities and drag the politics "into a gutter", adding Labour is focused on bringing fair change. The Conservatives have not responded to a comment request. Reform critics claim that the fledgling Reform Party, which was founded in 2018 as the Brexit Party before being rebranded 2021, is utterly unprepared to govern regionally or nationally. Six Reform sources, who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the issue, said the party would be better served by a second-place finish in the Scottish or Welsh parliaments to familiarize itself with the workings of administrations and assemblies before the next national election. VETTING WORSE: NAZI SALUTES, RACIST COMPLAINTS Reform's vetting process for candidates has been one of its most scandalous and thorny problems. After the failures of the 2024 general election, where more than 100 candidates, including some for racist remarks, were removed from the race, Reform tightened up its procedures. Llyr Powell of the Reform Party, who is running for the so-called "super constituency" in Blaenau Caerffili Rhymni in southern Wales, said that part of his vetting included mock interviews with Jeremy Kyle (a UK talkshow host from a UK tabloid). The problem is still very large. Since March when the party announced their slate of over 160 candidates in Scotland, and Wales, fifteen of them have withdrew due to the resurfacing or derogatory material on the internet, disagreements with the party or administrative errors. • Oil prices drop as investors are encouraged by positive earnings

  The global stock market rose on Tuesday as investors took heart from a series of robust earnings. Meanwhile, simmering hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz between the U.S.A. and Iran kept oil prices well above $100 per barrel. The yen was also on traders' minds after it briefly jumped during the previous session. This fueled speculation about another round of Tokyo intervention. The STOXX 600 index rose 0.5% in Europe. This was boosted by Anheuser-Busch shares, which surpassed expectations with their first-quarter results. Also, Unicredit, an Italian lender, reported record quarterly profits. On Monday, the U.S. launched new attacks on the Gulf as it fought for control of the Strait of Hormuz through dueling maritime blockades. This came shortly after U.S. president Donald Trump launched an effort to move stranded oil tankers and other vessels through this vital energy-trade chokepoint. YEN INTERVENTION WORT After Monday's brief surge, the?yen has been stable at 157.26 dollars after reaching an intraday peak of 155.69. Satsuki Katayama, Japanese Finance Minister, spoke Monday against speculative foreign exchange trading. Market participants are on high alert for any further intervention. Sources say Tokyo intervened on Thursday to support?its ailing currencies. Abbas Keshvani is Asia Macro Strategist for RBC Capital Markets. He said that authorities may intervene again, if the dollar/yen keeps testing 160, which they have historically protected. In 2022, Tokyo fired "three volleys" of intervention within a few week. "We believe that the?intervention is merely a way to keep a lid on USD/JPY and not a catalyst for protracted yen strengthening," he stated. The Australian dollar traded at $0.7161 last, after Reserve Bank of Australia raised rates on Tuesday for the third time in this year, a move that was widely anticipated. Spot gold, meanwhile, rose 0.7%, to $4,553, above the low of $4,500 on Monday, which was the lowest level since March 31.
