Olympics-Protesters in Milan rally against US ICE presence and school closures before the opening ceremony

On Friday, hundreds of protesters rallied in Milan to voice their opposition to the presence of "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and the 'closure of streets and schools in the 'city' ahead of the opening ceremony for the Milano Cortina Winter Games.

Last week, the U.S. State Department announced that ICE and other federal agencies would assist in protecting visiting Americans. This decision sparked protests immediately in Milan.

Italian authorities blocked some areas of the city and ordered that schools in central Milan remain closed on Friday to ensure security and reduce traffic disruptions.

Students with signs saying "ICE out" assembled at 'Piazzale Leonardo da Vinci in front of a Politecnico University building in the eastern part.

At the front, a banner was displayed criticizing the presence of ICE and U.S. Vice-President JD Vance as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The opposition also opposes closing down areas of the city to host what they see as an unsustainable Olympics, while housing prices are unaffordable and social spaces are scarce.

Greenpeace, an environmental group, staged a protest on Thursday morning in front of the cathedral to protest the role of Eni, the Italian oil company, as a sponsor for the Games.

On Friday evening, a torch-lit march organized by the Committee Against the Olympics will be held in an area near the site of the Opening Ceremony. (Reporting and writing by Emilio Parodi; editing by Pritha Sakar)
