SQM's quarterly net profit in Chile falls by 59% due to lower lithium prices

SQM Chile, the second largest lithium producer in the world, reported on Wednesday a 59% drop in its quarterly profit due to lower prices for lithium.

LSEG data shows that the company's second-quarter profit was $88.4 millions, which is below analysts' expectations of $143.01million.

Analysts had predicted $1.064 billion for the third quarter. The company's $1.04 billion revenue was in line with that.

The company reported that lithium prices have dropped by 34% in the last year.

Since their peak at the end of 2022, global prices for lithium - a key component in electric vehicle batteries - have fallen nearly 90%. This has caused producers to cut back on workforces and rethink plans.

SQM started laying off 5% its Chilean employees in June as it battled a prolonged slump in the global price of battery metal.

As expected, the second quarter saw a lower market price for lithium than in previous quarters. In this context, we hit lower limits in some contracts that were in place. This affected the volumes agreed, said SQM's Chief Executive Officer Ricardo Ramos.

Moody's downgraded the outlook of the miner to "negative" last month from "stable", due to the uncertainty surrounding lithium revenues, but confirmed the credit rating.

SQM is one of the two companies in Chile that produces lithium. It also makes industrial chemicals and fertilizers. This year, the company will finalize its partnership with Chile's state-owned copper producer Codelco for lithium production in the Atacama Salt Flat.
