4 dead in Channel crossing attempt, French authorities and media report

One person passed away in his attempt to cross the Channel in a rowboat to Britain, the French coastguard stated on Wednesday, while the bodies of three other migrants were discovered at a beach, according to media reports.

France's Regional Operational Centre for Monitoring and Rescue (CROSS) dispatched a rescue vessel and a French Navy helicopter after reports of individuals struggling in the water between Hardelot and Équihen-Plage on Wednesday morning.

Rescuers airlifted around 15 individuals to security, however one person was declared dead in spite of emergency situation efforts.

On Wednesday afternoon, 3 bodies were discovered at neighboring beaches, regional media franceinfo and La Voix Du Nord reported. They cited a local prosecutor as stating an examination was opened to develop a possible link with the earlier drowning.

The public prosecutor's workplace in Boulogne-Sur-Mer did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for remark.
