The army reports that 15 soldiers were killed by militants in an attack on northern Benin.

A spokesperson for the army said that militants killed 15 soldiers at a military base in northern Benin and injured five more, as violence spreads across 'West Africa.

Al Qaeda-affiliated fighters and Islamic State militants have intensified their attacks in the borderlands of Niger, Benin, and Nigeria. Remote transit zones are now active conflict zones.

The al-Qaeda-linked 'Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin' (JNIM), has claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attack on the village of 'Kofouno in northern Benin.

Colonel James Johnson, spokesperson for the Benin Armed Forces, said that "the attack resulted in 15 deaths and five wounded personnel whose lives were not in danger."

Johnson said that the army destroyed at least four motorcycles and killed four "terrorists", as they fled.

He denied JNIM’s claim that they controlled the Kofouno Camp.

Benin rarely comments on the jihadist violence that is taking place in the North, although it did say last April that 54 soldiers were killed by an attack carried out by JNIM.

In December, disgruntled soldiers tried to overthrow President?Patrice talon through a military coup. They cited the deteriorating situation of security in northern Benin and the "ignorance and neglect" shown towards?our fallen brothers in arms.

The plot was foiled by the help of neighbouring countries, including Nigeria.
