One dead, 12 people caught 1,000 feet underground at Colorado mine traveler destination

Someone was dead and 12 others were caught 1,000 feet (300 meters) underground on Thursday following an unspecified elevator failure at a previous Colorado gold mine that is now a tourist attraction, officials said.

Another 11 individuals were saved from the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine destination in Cripple Creek, Colorado, Teller County Constable Jason Mikesell told reporters.

Emergency situation responders were trying to fix the elevator to bring back the 11 travelers and one tour guide who were caught, Mikesell said.

With one trip group below ground, the elevator experienced some type of mechanical failure with another group aboard, resulting in one casualty while four other individuals suffered small injuries, Mikesell said without providing information of how the person passed away.
