Worldwide nickel market surplus to narrow in 2024 -INSG.

The surplus in the worldwide nickel market is expected to narrow to 109,000 metric tons in 2024 from 163,000 tons in 2023, the International Nickel Study Hall ( INSG) said on Wednesday.

Prices for nickel, used in stainless steel and electrical vehicle batteries, fell by 45% in 2023 as leading manufacturer Indonesia enhanced output. They are up 15% up until now this year as the country reviews applications for mining quota approvals.

International nickel output is anticipated to increase to 3.55 million loads in 2024 from 3.36 million heaps in 2023 as production of various types of nickel items in Indonesia continues to increase, the INSG said.

In China, total output is expected to rise too as higher nickel cathode and nickel sulphate production balanced out lower nickel pig iron production.

In other places, due to success issues, a number of producing centers have been mothballed, lowered production or are considering the future possibility of among these choices, the INSG included.

International need for nickel is anticipated to increase to 3.45 million tons in 2024 from 3.19 million heaps in 2023 amidst an broadening stainless steel sector in China and Indonesia, the Lisbon-based group said.
